The story of Anita

Indiana's ghost towns are canal towns, coal camps, and railroad stops the interstates finished off.

Anita is an extinct town in Hensley Township, Johnson County, Indiana, United States. Anita was the site of an Illinois Central Railroad passenger depot, the station house of which was moved and converted to a home near Trafalgar in 1936. By the 1980s, Anita had been depopulated. The state highway department intended to remove it from maps, but preservationists succeeded in placing a roadside plaque to commemorate the town.

What you'll find today

The on-the-ground condition of Anita is unverified — it's listed here with unknown status. That could mean standing buildings, or an empty field. Go prepared for either, and consider sharing what you find so the record improves.

Nobody has confirmed the access situation, so treat any visit as reconnaissance: verify land ownership first, and be ready to admire from the road.

Getting there

Here's the honest truth: access to Anita is unverified. We couldn't confirm whether the site sits on public land, private property, or something in between — so verify land ownership and local rules before visiting, and respect private property at all times.

Good to know

Ghost-town etiquette is simple: take only photographs. Removing artifacts is illegal on public lands and disrespectful everywhere else — and on federal land it can be a serious offense.
