Best

Texas ghost towns run the full arc of the state's obsessions: cattle, cotton, oil, and the railroads that served all three. In Reagan County, the pattern was usually the railroad's doing — a town platted where the tracks crossed a trail or a river, grown fat on shipping cattle or cotton, then quietly strangled when the railroad bypassed it, merged, or simply pulled up the branch line. The oil booms — Spindletop in 1901, then the great East Texas and Permian strikes — created the opposite: instant cities that sometimes vanished just as fast when the field played out. Best is one verse in that long song.
