Clear Grit

Canals and railroads made the Midwest's towns, and then made most of them unnecessary. Clear Grit likely sits on one of those earlier transportation grids in the backcountry — a canal town bypassed by the railroad, or a railroad town bypassed by the highway. The region's extractive chapters — lead, coal, iron, lumber, even oil in places — each built their own string of company towns and boom camps. When the vein ran out or the mill closed, there was usually farmland to fall back on, which is why the Midwest has fewer stark ruins and more quiet fade-outs: a town that shrinks to a crossroads, then to a name on an old plat map.

The on-the-ground condition of Clear Grit is unverified — it's listed here with unknown status. That could mean standing buildings, or an empty field. Go prepared for either, and consider sharing what you find so the record improves.

Nobody has confirmed the access situation, so treat any visit as reconnaissance: verify land ownership first, and be ready to admire from the road.

Here's the honest truth: access to Clear Grit is unverified. We couldn't confirm whether the site sits on public land, private property, or something in between — so verify land ownership and local rules before visiting, and respect private property at all times.

Ghost-town etiquette is simple: take only photographs. Removing artifacts is illegal on public lands and disrespectful everywhere else — and on federal land it can be a serious offense.
