Denny

California invented the ghost town as an art form. The Gold Rush of 1849 pulled hundreds of thousands of people into the Sierra Nevada foothills, and almost overnight the map filled with places like Denny — camps that went from canvas tents to wooden main streets in a single season. The easy placer gold played out within a few years, but hard-rock mining, hydraulic operations, and later copper and tungsten kept the high country working for decades. When the ore finally gave out — or the federal government shut down gold mining during World War II — there was nothing to keep people in these remote canyons. Denny is what that long goodbye looks like.

The on-the-ground condition of Denny is unverified — it's listed here with unknown status. That could mean standing buildings, or an empty field. Go prepared for either, and consider sharing what you find so the record improves.

Nobody has confirmed the access situation, so treat any visit as reconnaissance: verify land ownership first, and be ready to admire from the road.

Here's the honest truth: access to Denny is unverified. We couldn't confirm whether the site sits on public land, private property, or something in between — so verify land ownership and local rules before visiting, and respect private property at all times. The mapped point for Denny is roughly 40.9440, -123.3867 — use it as a starting point and cross-reference a current topographic map before leaving pavement.

Ghost-town etiquette is simple: take only photographs. Removing artifacts is illegal on public lands and disrespectful everywhere else — and on federal land it can be a serious offense.
