Fallsville is the lone documented ghost town in Highland County — for now.
The story of Fallsville
Ohio's ghost towns are canal-era villages and coal and iron towns from the state's industrial first act.
Fallsville, Ohio was a small town in Highland County in existence from 1848 to 1893. The area was first settled in the mid-1820s by farmers Simon and Elizabeth Clouser. They built a grist mill which, as it was the only mill in the immediate vicinity, became successful. Around this additional mills were built, as well as stores and a quary. A town was platted in 1848 by John Timberlake with three streets and eight residences in place. Fallsville was sufficiently socially active to have its own literary society.
What you'll find today
The on-the-ground condition of Fallsville is unverified — it's listed here with unknown status. That could mean standing buildings, or an empty field. Go prepared for either, and consider sharing what you find so the record improves.
Nobody has confirmed the access situation, so treat any visit as reconnaissance: verify land ownership first, and be ready to admire from the road.
Getting there
Here's the honest truth: access to Fallsville is unverified. We couldn't confirm whether the site sits on public land, private property, or something in between — so verify land ownership and local rules before visiting, and respect private property at all times.
Good to know
Ghost-town etiquette is simple: take only photographs. Removing artifacts is illegal on public lands and disrespectful everywhere else — and on federal land it can be a serious offense.
