The story of Kauwerak

Kennecott was the richest copper mine ever found, and for thirty years it was a small industrial empire in the Wrangells — company town, hospital, railroad to the coast. When the ore ran out in 1938, they walked away from all of it. Kauwerak in Nome Census Area County belongs to that Alaska tradition of total extraction and total departure: canneries that emptied when the salmon runs failed, mining camps that died with the price of copper, railroad towns the railroad no longer needed. The cold preserves everything — machinery, buildings, even newspapers — which makes Alaska's ghost towns feel less like ruins and more like places where everyone just stepped out for a minute, seventy years ago.
