Kealakomo comes from that world. When the plantations mechanized or moved operations overseas, the villages emptied — sometimes almost overnight. The work was hard and the pay was low, but the villages were complete communities, and their ruins — stone walls, mill foundations, the company store — are still scattered through the old cane lands. When the mill closed, there was nowhere else on the island for the economy to go, so the life just stopped.
