Kenaston

On the northern Plains, the town was often younger than the railroad and older than the automobile — a narrow window. Kenaston in Ward County likely dates to the homestead boom, when North Dakota added counties and towns at a frantic pace. The economics were always marginal: dryland wheat farming is a bet on rain, and the house usually wins. When the farms consolidated — one family with big equipment replacing ten families with horses — the towns lost their customers. The depot closed, the school consolidated, the last store shut its doors. The fields around Kenaston are still planted every spring. The town just isn't where the farmers live anymore.

The on-the-ground condition of Kenaston is unverified — it's listed here with unknown status. That could mean standing buildings, or an empty field. Go prepared for either, and consider sharing what you find so the record improves.
