Kensico isn't the ghost town on the postcards, which is exactly why it's worth knowing about. Kensico Cemetery is a cemetery in Valhalla, New York, United States.

Kensico is the lone documented ghost town in Westchester County — for now.

The story of Kensico

New York's ghost towns are canal towns the railroad bypassed and Adirondack iron and lumber settlements.

Kensico Cemetery is a cemetery in Valhalla, New York, United States. It was founded in 1889, when many New York City cemeteries were becoming full and rural cemeteries were being created near the railroads that served the city. Initially 250 acres (101.2 ha), it was expanded to 600 acres (240 ha) in 1905, but reduced to 461 acres (187 ha) in 1912, when a portion was sold to the neighboring Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Many entertainment figures of the early twentieth century, including Russian-born Sergei Rachmaninoff, were buried here.

What you'll find today

The on-the-ground condition of Kensico is unverified — it's listed here with unknown status. That could mean standing buildings, or an empty field. Go prepared for either, and consider sharing what you find so the record improves.

Nobody has confirmed the access situation, so treat any visit as reconnaissance: verify land ownership first, and be ready to admire from the road.

Getting there

Here's the honest truth: access to Kensico is unverified. We couldn't confirm whether the site sits on public land, private property, or something in between — so verify land ownership and local rules before visiting, and respect private property at all times.

Good to know

Ghost-town etiquette is simple: take only photographs. Removing artifacts is illegal on public lands and disrespectful everywhere else — and on federal land it can be a serious offense.
