Montana's ghost towns span gold-rush gulches and the great homestead bust that emptied the Hi-Line.

The story of Lion City

Montana's gold came all at once and left the same way. The Alder Gulch strike of 1863 — fourteen miles of pay dirt — created Virginia City and a string of camps across the territory in a single summer. Lion City belongs to the long tail of that rush and the ones that followed: silver in the 1870s, copper at Butte, and then the great homestead gamble of the 1900s-1910s, when railroads lured farmers onto the dry plains with promises the rainfall couldn't keep. The bust of 1919-1921 — drought, wheat prices collapsing, banks failing — emptied the homestead towns as thoroughly as any played-out mine.

Calling it Lion City was either optimism or a very good joke — boomtowns were never modest about their ambitions.
