Boomtowns are built on optimism; ghost towns are what's left when it runs out. Welcome to McGees. A ghost town of unknown status in Jefferson County County, Washington.
Washington's ghost towns are mill towns and mining camps in country so green the forest is already taking them back.
McGees is the lone documented ghost town in Jefferson County County — for now.
The story of McGees
Washington's ghost towns are timber towns first, mining towns second. The great fir and cedar forests of the Cascades and Olympics fed mills that ran day and night, and the companies built towns like McGees to house the crews — bunkhouses, a cookhouse, a company store, all of it owned by the mill. When the accessible timber was cut, the company simply moved the operation, and there was nothing to stay for. Eastern Washington added a mining chapter: gold, silver, and lead in the Okanogan and Cascades, smaller and shorter-lived than the timber. Either way, McGees in Jefferson County County was an extraction town, and extraction towns are temporary by design.
