The story of Oro Blanco

Like so many Arizona camps, Oro Blanco was a child of copper and silver — the twin engines that built the territory. When prospectors fanned out across Santa Cruz County in the late 1800s, any promising outcrop could birth a town overnight: tents first, then saloons, a general store, and a post office if the ore held. Tombstone's silver strike of 1879 and Bisbee's copper wealth proved what the desert could pay, and hundreds of lesser camps chased the same dream. But desert mines were fickle. When the high-grade ore pinched out or metal prices collapsed, there was no second act — no river, no farmland, nothing to fall back on. The mines closed, the railroad stopped calling, and Oro Blanco emptied as fast as it had filled, leaving its bones to the sun.
