The story of Red Lion

Montana's gold came all at once and left the same way. The Alder Gulch strike of 1863 — fourteen miles of pay dirt — created Virginia City and a string of camps across the territory in a single summer. Red Lion belongs to the long tail of that rush and the ones that followed: silver in the 1870s, copper at Butte, and then the great homestead gamble of the 1900s-1910s, when railroads lured farmers onto the dry plains with promises the rainfall couldn't keep. The bust of 1919-1921 — drought, wheat prices collapsing, banks failing — emptied the homestead towns as thoroughly as any played-out mine.
