The story of South Lowell
Coal built the company towns of the southern Appalachians — and the companies owned everything down to the preacher's salary. South Lowell in the backcountry likely worked that way: a mine opened, the company built houses and a store, miners got paid in scrip, and the town existed at the company's pleasure. When the seam ran thin or the market turned, the company closed the mine and the town died with it — sometimes evicting the miners from company houses within weeks. The tipples and company stores that survive are the most honest industrial ruins in America: no romance, just the machinery of an economy that used up places the way it used up coal.
South Lowell sold the one thing the country around it didn't have: water.
