If walls could talk, Three Saints Bay would never shut up. Lucky for visitors, they mostly just stand there. Three Saints Bay (Russian: Бухта Трёх Святителей, romanized: Bukhta Tryokh Svyatitelyej) is a 9-mile (14-kilometer)-long inlet on the southeast side of Kodiak Island, Alaska, north of Sitkalidak Strait.
Kodiak Island Borough County holds 4 documented ghost towns, including Afognak, Katmai, Port Wakefield — Three Saints Bay keeps them company on the map.
The story of Three Saints Bay
Alaska's ghost towns are the most extreme on the continent — total commitment, total abandonment, everything preserved by the cold.
It is 60 mi (97 km) southwest of Kodiak. The Three Saints Bay Site is an archaeological site, the location of the first Russian settlement in Alaska, Three Saints Harbor (Гавань Трёх Святителей, Gavan’ Tryokh Svyatitelyej). The settlement was founded in 1784 by Grigory Shelikhov.
What you'll find today
The on-the-ground condition of Three Saints Bay is unverified — it's listed here with unknown status. That could mean standing buildings, or an empty field. Go prepared for either, and consider sharing what you find so the record improves.
Nobody has confirmed the access situation, so treat any visit as reconnaissance: verify land ownership first, and be ready to admire from the road.
Getting there
Here's the honest truth: access to Three Saints Bay is unverified. We couldn't confirm whether the site sits on public land, private property, or something in between — so verify land ownership and local rules before visiting, and respect private property at all times.
Good to know
Ghost-town etiquette is simple: take only photographs. Removing artifacts is illegal on public lands and disrespectful everywhere else — and on federal land it can be a serious offense.
