If walls could talk, Vinegaroon would never shut up. Lucky for visitors, they mostly just stand there. A ghost town of unknown status in Otero County County, New Mexico.
New Mexico's ghost towns layer Spanish-era villages, railroad creations, and coal camps across a single stark landscape.
Vinegaroon is the lone documented ghost town in Otero County County — for now.
The story of Vinegaroon
New Mexico's ghost towns come in three flavors: Spanish and Mexican-era settlements that predated the Americans, railroad towns the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe conjured out of nothing, and mining camps that chased coal, copper, and gold through the state's hills. Dawson's coal mines, Santa Rita's copper pit, the gold camps of the Ortiz Mountains — each built a complete little world with a company store and company scrip. When the mines played out or the railroad dieselized and no longer needed its water stops, those worlds folded. Vinegaroon, out in Otero County County, is one of the folds.
What you'll find today
The on-the-ground condition of Vinegaroon is unverified — it's listed here with unknown status. That could mean standing buildings, or an empty field. Go prepared for either, and consider sharing what you find so the record improves.
Nobody has confirmed the access situation, so treat any visit as reconnaissance: verify land ownership first, and be ready to admire from the road.
Getting there
Here's the honest truth: access to Vinegaroon is unverified. We couldn't confirm whether the site sits on public land, private property, or something in between — so verify land ownership and local rules before visiting, and respect private property at all times.
Good to know
Ghost-town etiquette is simple: take only photographs. Removing artifacts is illegal on public lands and disrespectful everywhere else — and on federal land it can be a serious offense.
