Volinia isn't the ghost town on the postcards, which is exactly why it's worth knowing about. Volinia Township is a civil township of Cass County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 1,096 at the 2020 census.
Cass County holds 3 documented ghost towns, including Calvin Center, Pokagon — Volinia keeps them company on the map.
The story of Volinia
Michigan's ghost towns are copper and iron towns of the Upper Peninsula, plus lumber camps the pine barons abandoned.
Volinia Township is a civil township of Cass County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 1,096 at the 2020 census. When the township was organized in 1833, it was at first named Volhynia, after the province in Poland. It is believed to have been given to honor General Tadeusz Kościuszko, the Polish patriot who helped the United States during the American Revolutionary War. The name was altered first to "Volenia" and then by 1901 or earlier to "Volinia". The township is the site of Newton Woods, a U.S. National Natural Landmark.
What you'll find today
The on-the-ground condition of Volinia is unverified — it's listed here with unknown status. That could mean standing buildings, or an empty field. Go prepared for either, and consider sharing what you find so the record improves.
Nobody has confirmed the access situation, so treat any visit as reconnaissance: verify land ownership first, and be ready to admire from the road.
Getting there
Here's the honest truth: access to Volinia is unverified. We couldn't confirm whether the site sits on public land, private property, or something in between — so verify land ownership and local rules before visiting, and respect private property at all times.
Good to know
Ghost-town etiquette is simple: take only photographs. Removing artifacts is illegal on public lands and disrespectful everywhere else — and on federal land it can be a serious offense.
