Willie isn't the ghost town on the postcards, which is exactly why it's worth knowing about. Blind Willie McTell (born William Samuel McTier; circa 1903 – August 19, 1959) was an American Piedmont blues and ragtime singer, songwriter and guitarist.
Liberty County holds 5 documented ghost towns, including Josselyn, McIntosh, Sunbury — Willie keeps them company on the map.
The story of Willie
Georgia's ghost towns are gold-rush towns from 1829, cotton ports, and kaolin and lumber settlements.
Blind Willie McTell (born William Samuel McTier; circa 1903 – August 19, 1959) was an American Piedmont blues and ragtime singer, songwriter and guitarist. He played in a fluid, syncopated finger picking guitar style common among many East Coast, Piedmont blues players. Like his Atlanta contemporaries, he came to use twelve-string guitars exclusively. McTell was also adept at slide guitar, unusual among ragtime bluesmen. He sang in a smooth and often laid-back tenor which differed greatly from the harsher voices of many Delta bluesmen such as Charley Patton.
What you'll find today
The on-the-ground condition of Willie is unverified — it's listed here with unknown status. That could mean standing buildings, or an empty field. Go prepared for either, and consider sharing what you find so the record improves.
Nobody has confirmed the access situation, so treat any visit as reconnaissance: verify land ownership first, and be ready to admire from the road.
Getting there
Here's the honest truth: access to Willie is unverified. We couldn't confirm whether the site sits on public land, private property, or something in between — so verify land ownership and local rules before visiting, and respect private property at all times.
Good to know
Ghost-town etiquette is simple: take only photographs. Removing artifacts is illegal on public lands and disrespectful everywhere else — and on federal land it can be a serious offense.
