The story of Zama
Oil changed the South the way gold changed the West — just faster and messier. The early-1900s strikes turned sleepy farm towns into roaring boomtowns overnight: derricks in the courthouse square, roughnecks, money moving too fast to count. Zama may have caught that wave in the backcountry, or it may belong to the older timber-and-cotton economy the oil patch overran. Either way, the bust was as abrupt as the boom. When a field played out, the rigs moved to the next county and the boomtown deflated — sometimes in months.
